The Ocular Oncology Service is a world-class center for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of eye tumors and cancers. This department is the largest eye cancer center in the United States and provides care for patients with common and rare cancers, many of which are serious life-threatening conditions. The Service manages over 2,300 new patients each year from many cities across the USA and many countries around the world. Patients are referred from countries like India, Australia, Brazil, and many others with tumors that can only be managed by the expertise available on the Ocular Oncology Service.
The Ocular Oncology Service provides excellence in eye care and cutting-edge treatments. They were among the first in the world to use plaque radiotherapy to treat eye cancers and have spent 4 decades perfecting this popular focal radiotherapy method, particularly for melanoma of the eye. They were among the first to use chemoreduction for retinoblastoma, a cancer in children, and have provided education for ophthalmologists with their numerous publications on this topic. In fact, they were the first to publish on chemoreduction and their protocol is now used worldwide for babies with eye cancer and has saved hundreds of lives. The Ocular Oncology Service now is exploring newer techniques to deliver radiotherapy and chemotherapy to the eye with minimal side effects. They are working with radiation oncologists, pediatric oncologists, and neurosurgeons to improve therapies.
The Ocular Oncology Service manages tumors of the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, orbit, and intraocular structures including the iris, ciliary body, choroid, retina, and optic disc. There are a variety of tumors in these tissues including melanoma, nevus, metastasis, hemangioma, retinoblastoma, astrocytoma, lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and many others. The senior members of this team have published over 1000 reports on eye tumors and have published 10 textbooks, all of which are used for educating eye doctors and physicians worldwide.
The physicians on the Ocular Oncology Service are well trained in the fields of ophthalmology and specialty-fellowship in ocular oncology. There are 6 staff doctors including Dr. Jerry Shields (Director), Dr. Carol Shields (Associate Director), Dr. Sara Lally, Dr. Arman Mashayekhi, , Dr. Carlos Bianciotto, and Dr. Britt Parvus. The Ocular Oncology Service provides fellowship training for ophthalmologists interested in this subspecialty and generally has 6 national and international clinical and research fellows each year.
