Children can be afflicted by many of the same eye diseases as adults. They may be born with or may develop cataracts, glaucoma, retinal and orbital tumors, or other problems. Often, however, there are differences that affect the treatment and management of children's eye problems.

Children are more than miniature adults, and their eye problems require diagnostic and treatment methods that are usually different from those used in the older age group. In 1967, Wills Eye, with the help of the international organization Fight for Sight, established the Children's Eye Center, which treats children under the age of 16. Even before a child can speak, pediatric ophthalmologists can tell what a child sees, if he or she needs eyeglasses or contact lenses, and if any problems exist with the eyes.

The Children's Center sees about 12,000 children a year and is staffed by ophthalmology residents and fellows under the supervision of senior pediatric ophthalmologists on the Wills Eye staff. While you await your child's appointment in the Center, your child can take advantage of the toys and play area available here for his or her amusement.

Fortunately most childrens' eye problems can be treated without surgery, but about 1,000 children per year undergo surgical correction of their eye problems at Wills Eye. Most of the patients are from the Delaware Valley, but many come from other states and all parts of the world.

The mission of the Wills Eye Pediatric Ophthalmology Department is to improve efforts to prevent childhood eye injury and to research new ways to diagnose better and treat the eye problems of children. In fact, the service is a major research center involved with intraocular lens implants in children with cataracts. In addition, the Foerderer Eye Movement Center for Children is internationally respected for its scientific studies of eye motility disorders.
