History
In his bequest in 1832, the Quaker merchant James Wills created a trust to establish the “Wills Hospital for the Relief of the Indigent Blind & Lame” to be administered by the “Mayor and Corporation of the City of Philadelphia.”
Leadership & Governance
Wills Eye Hospital is governed by the Board of Directors of City Trusts and the Wills Eye Committee. The organization is led by the Chief Executive Officer and the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief.

Wills Eye
Since its founding, Wills Eye has maintained its commitment to serving the needs of our patients and the community. Through our partnerships with organizations such as Thomas Jefferson University, the American Diabetes Association, and the School District of Philadelphia, we endeavor to support and address the eye health needs of children and adults who live in the Philadelphia region.
