Dr. Amarasekera completed her undergraduate education at the Pennsylvania State University as part of a combined, accelerated BS/MD program. She received her Doctor of Medicine from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. During her time at Jefferson, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and served as Vice President. Dr. Amarasekera completed an internship at Pennsylvania Hospital followed by an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital. At Wills Eye she was selected as Co-Chief Resident in her final year of training. During residency she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor society for delivering compassionate care and awarded the Luo Family Distinguished Service Award for her leadership and excellence in patient care. Following residency, she completed a glaucoma fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital and was awarded the Rick Bay Excellence in Eyecare Education Scholarship. Dr. Amarasekera has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Ophthalmology and JAMA Ophthalmology, and has presented her research at several national conferences. She has been honored with the Shipman Resident Research Award as well as awards from both the Women in Ophthalmology and American Academy of Ophthalmology national conferences for her research work.
