Dr. John Witherell earned a degree in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania prior to attending Jefferson Medical College, where he graduated magna cum laude. Dr. Witherell then completed his ophthalmic residency training at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in 1998, where he continues to guide residents through their surgical training.
Dr. Witherell has lectured on customized cataract surgery and the use of premium implants during cataract surgery. He actively participates in clinical research with a major pharmaceutical company as a cataract specialist.
Dr. Witherell believes that education and clear explanations are critical to effective patient care. During patient encounters, he makes a point to spend "whatever time is necessary" to ensure patients understand their condition and treatment options.
Dr. Witherell’s specialties include bladeless cataract surgery utilizing the LensX laser system, treatment of diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration, and treatment of glaucoma. He is also very experienced in laser vision correction (LASIK) to eliminate the need for glasses.
Dr. Witherell is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is recognized as a "Top Doc" by "Mainline Today" magazine.
