During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is replaced with a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is implanted in the same way as the
traditional (IOL) but differs in that an ophthalmologist can implement changes to your vision post-surgery, whereas the standard IOL uses a "once-and-done" vision measurement. These standard IOL estimates will provide an improved visual experience for patients but are not easily changed should the estimate be imperfect.
With the Light Adjustable Lens, patients can get their prescriptions adjusted up to three times following surgery. Each adjustment can be adapted for patient preference. From surgery to final adjustment, this new cataract replacement lens process may take seven to nine weeks, including post-surgery adjustments as needed.
The Light Adjustable Lens is a refractive procedure not covered by Medicare, and therefore, patients should expect to incur out-of-pocket costs.
