Trusted Experience and Expertise
Children can be afflicted with many eye diseases. They may be born with or develop cataracts, glaucoma, retinal and orbital tumors, or other problems. Our pediatric ophthalmologists can evaluate your child and determine an individualized plan to maximize their vision.
Even before a child can speak, a Wills Pediatric Ophthalmologist can tell what a child sees.
Children can be afflicted by many eye diseases. They may be born with or develop cataracts, glaucoma, retinal and orbital tumors, or other problems. More commonly, children may need glasses to see clearly or intervention for misaligned eyes (strabismus) or poor visual development in one eye (amblyopia). Our pediatric ophthalmology team performs about 1,000 surgical procedures for children from around the world yearly.
Although uncommon, children of all ages–including babies–can get cataracts.
Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by optic nerve damage. It is relatively rare in children.
Nearly 20% of children develop refractive errors that require the use of glasses before adolescence.
The most common causes of red eye are allergies, infections, inflammation, and trauma.
Amblyopia is decreased vision due to a problem in vision development during childhood.
Our children’s ophthalmology team diagnoses and treats Retinoblastoma, the leading eye cancer in infants and children.
Adults may also develop problems with misalignment or have persistent issues from childhood. Our department has the expertise to help evaluate and manage misalignment issues, including the use of prisms, fusional exercises, and, if needed, surgical intervention.
In today's age, marked by ubiquitous video screens on smartphones, computers, and more, children are estimated to spend an average of seven hours daily on entertainment and media.* The American Academy of Ophthalmology and our own children’s eye doctors recommend that parents be aware of the many possible health effects–both within and outside the eye–that can result from too much screen time.
Wills Eye Pediatric Ophthalmologists are well-trained and experienced in treating and evaluating eye defects or conditions in children of all ages, from newborns and infants to teens and young adults. For the best pediatric ophthalmologist for your child, schedule an appointment at either of our two locations.
